As
a three-year starter for Centralia Orphan
basketball, he scored 1,233 career points on
teams that were a combined 67-19 (1989 23-6,
1990 22-6), 1991 22-7). Altadonna was named
MVP of the 1991 team averaging 18.1 points
per game as well as 6.2 rebounds per game
and shot 33 percent from three point range
and 81 percent from the free throw line.
The
1990 Orphans were South Seven Conference
champions. The 1991 team captured the
Centralia Holiday Tourney title (1990) as
Altadonna was named first team
all-tournament. He was also named
first team all-tournament at the Salem
Tourney (1991) and received first team
All-South Seven Conference recognition in
1990 and 1991.
After
the 1991 season was completed, he was chosen
to play in the IBCA all-star game in Peoria,
the Lions Club all-star game at Rend Lake
College and was one of 12 Southern Illinois
players to be chosen to play in the “Hoops
for the Homeless” charity all-star game in
Evansville, IN. He was named first team
all-Southern Illinois by the Evansville
Courier and receivedhonorable mention
All-State recognition from the Associated
Press in 1990 and 1991.
He
was the starting quarterback for three
seasons of Orphan football and lettered in
track as a hurdler.
After
high school, Altadonna received a four year
scholarship to play basketball at Illinois
State University. He helped ISU to a 73-45
overall record in four seasons. They won
back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference
titles in 1992, 1993 and made it to the
second round of the NIT in 1995. As team
captain in 1995, he led the Redbirds in
scoring during MVC play and was sixth
nationally in free throw percentage (90.7).
He was also a MVC scholar athlete in 1992.
In
1996, he was a Redbird student assistant
under head coach Kevin Stallings as ISU was
22-11 and went to the quarterfinal round of
the NIT. After being an assistant coach at
the University of North Texas, he returned
to ISU in 1998. Before leaving to be on the
Kansas State University staff in 2003-04,he
helped ISU to two post-season tournaments
including advancing to the second round of
the NCAA Tourney with a 25-6 record in 1998.
Following two seasons at KSU, Altadonna
spent seven seasons as an assistant to Mike Miller at Eastern Illinois
University.
