Delos Brown became the first
major league baseball player to hail from
Centralia.
As a high
schooler at Centralia, he played four years
on the varsity basketball team, 1909, 1910,
1911, 1912. In 1909, the team was invited to
the state tournament in Chicago, where they
fell to Bloomington. The 1911 and 1912 teams under coach R.W.
Spurrier had records of 12-3 and 15-2
respectively. Brown scored 29 points in one
game against Alton in 1912. A feat that was
unheard of in those days.
While still in
high school, he cracked the starting line-up
on the Centralia White Sox minor league
team. In
1914 he was called up by the Chicago
White Sox, and on June 12 he played in one game. He was
sent back to the minor league after this one
game, but he refused to report, and took a
job with the railroad.
Brown passed
away some fifty years ago, but his legacy
will live on.
