As captain of the 1956 8-0-1 Centralia High School Football Team, he was a unanimous first team All-State center as chosen by the Champaign News Gazette. The 5’ 10” 200 lb. Senior was the only center chosen on the All-State team for that season.

The 1956 team outscored their opponents by an average of twenty-eight points per game. The one tie was with Benton, which also tied the Orphans for the South Seven Conference title. Crain was also named to the South Seven All-Conference team.

He also played varsity on the 1955 (4-5) and 1954 (9-1, Conference Champion) football teams at CHS.
