Eldo "Dick" Garrett
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
1984 Individual Award Winner


 

Garrett was a starting guard for the Centralia High School Orphans basketball teams in 1964 and 1965.  The 1964 team was South-Seven Conference champions and made it to the Elite Eight round of state play with a record of 28-2 (see 2003 Hall of Fame Honor Roll).  The 1965 team finished 23-6 and won the Centralia Holiday Tournament.  He led the team in scoring with 638 points and received All-State recognition.

Garrett received a basketball scholarship to Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and as a sophomore he teamed with Walt Frazier to take the Salukis to the NIT in New York's Madison Square Garden.  The Salukis downed St. Peters, Duke, Rutgers, and Marquette to take the title.  Garrett was named to the NIT All-Tournament Team.

The next two seasons he was the leading scorer for the Salukis with 482 and 445 points respectively.  In 1968 he set a record of 46 points and 19 field goals in one game.  The 1969 team also made a NIT appearance.  Garrett finished his SIU career with a total of 1337 points.

Garrett was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2nd round (12th pick, 27th overall) of the 1969 NBA draft.  He
played 5 years of pro-basketball making the 1969-70 NBA All-Rookie team with an average of 11.6 points per game with Los Angeles.

He was named to the NBA All-Rookie team as he played with the Lakers.  He teamed with such greats as Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, and Elgin Baylor.  The Lakers lost the NBA championship series to the New York Knicks in seven games.  The Knicks had a player by the name of Walt Frazier!

Garrett went to the Buffalo Braves expansion team and later played with the Knicks and the Milwaukee Bucks before ending his NBA career.
