George Hails Jr.
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
1997 Individual Award Winner

Hails received All-State honors as a halfback on the 11-0 1936 Centralia High School football team.  He still ranks high on the list of CHS football records. He is third in career points (228), third in career TD’s (36), third in single season points (142), second in single season TD’s (23).

He also played basketball on CHS teams that were 19-13 (1936 state appearance), 26-4 (1937 NEC champs).

Injuries during college and in the military during WWII, cut his playing days short. After his service time, he returned to the University of Illinois and earned his masters degree.

After several short coaching stints, he moved to California and in 1952, he accepted the head basketball, golf, and tennis coaching positions at Ventura College. In fifteen years as basketball coach, he had a record of 224-191, and two conference titles.

Hails gave up the basketball duties after a heart attack in 1967, and was still golf coach when a second heart attack claimed his life two years later at the age of 50.

He served as president of the California Junior College Coaches Association in 1965, and was inducted into the California J.C. Coaches Association Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970.
