Shelvy Haywood Kegler
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
1990 Individual Award Winner


 

In his senior year (1966) at Centralia High School Keglar scored 465 points to help lead the basketball Orphans to the Sweet-Sixteen and a 19-12 record.

Keglar's
leadership qualities blossomed as he went on to Kaskaskia College. He was the leader in scoring and assists for the 20-5 Blue Devils of 1967 as they garnered Conference and Sectional championships and placed 3rd in the NJCAA Illinois Region. 

In 1968 he was again the assist leader and scored 538 points as the team again won the Conference and Sectional, and placed fourth in the
NJCAA Region. While at Kaskaskia Keglar was twice named All-Conference and in 1968 received All-State honors.  Kegler received All-State honors in 1968 and All-Southern Illinois College Conference honors 1967 and 1968.

From KC Shelvy went on to Arkansas State University where he was captain of the basketball team.  While in the service, was named to the All-Army team. Later, he earned tryouts with the San Antonio Spurs and the Indiana Pacers.  

His work habits and leadership qualities proved an asset as Shelvy became a doctor and successful businessman,
and in 2008 he was inducted into the Kaskaskia College Sports Hall of Fame.
