Mike Maines
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
2003 Individual Award Winner

In an eight game season in 1984, Maines set a Centralia High School football record of 47 pass receptions for 770 yards, and scored eight touchdowns. After being the top ground gainer the previous season, he moved to a receiving position for 1984. He also was the kicker, kickoff return man, and totaled 45 tackles as an outstanding defensive player. Maines set a CHS career receiving record of 52 for 844 yards (since broken). Centralia received a forfeit win from Effingham giving the team a record of 6-3. The only six win season for a CHS football team since 1977. There has been none since.

Maines received All-State honors from the Champaign News Gazette - the only statewide team named. He was named Southern Illinois Player of the Year by the Evansville Courier and Press, as he was named to the All-Southern Illinois team both on offense and defense. Maines was also named both ways on the All South Seven Conference and Southern Illinois Coaches’ teams and was CHS MVP.

He went to Illinois State University on a football scholarship and received one varsity letter in 1986.

While better known for his football, Maines was also an accomplished all-around athlete. In 1985, he was a member of the CHS 400 & 800 meter relay teams that took South Seven Conference and Sectional titles. The 800 team finished sixth at the State meet.

Maines was also a starter on the 1984-85 Orphan basketball team.
