Herb Williams
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
1990 Individual Award Winner

A three year basketball starter for Centralia High School in 1961, 1962, 1963, Williams gained All-State honors in 1962 and 1963. The Orphan of those three years compiled a record of 90-7 and all made state playoff appearances with the 1963 team finishing second. He was named to the All-State tourney team in 1963.

Herb was known for his tremendous rebounding abilities, but he still managed to score 1081 points in his high school career. He, along with prep teammate Ron Johnson, went to Evansville for a great college career.

While at Evansville Williams was the leading rebounder on the 1965 undefeated NCAA College Division national champions. In 1967 he was named first-team All Conference for the Indiana Collegiate Conference.

After college he became an assistant coach in Centralia for a few years, eventually becoming the head coach at Evanston High School near Chicago. In 1984 he lead Evanston to a second place finish in Illinois with the championship game being the only loss of the year.

Williams was an Assistant Coach at Michigan State from 1984 to 1990, and Head Coach at Idaho State University from 1990-1999.
