1942 Centralia High School Football Team
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
1999 Team Award Winner


 

The 8-0-2 Centralia High School Orphans of 1942 beat Urbana (13-6), East Peoria (33-12), Carbondale (19-6) , and tied Flora (6-6) in non-conference play.  The unbeaten untied Mt. Vernon Rams came to town on Thanksgiving Day for what would be the final and deciding game for the Big Seven Conference title. 

The only blemish on Centralia’s conference record was a 0-0 tie with West Frankfort. The Orphans took the title by beating the Rams 34-8 as Clifton West gained 161 yards on the day and intercepted two Mt. Vernon passes. Other conference scores for the season were:  Harrisburg (32-6), Marion (25-0), Benton (26-0), and Herrin (14-0).  

Jim Edgar, Jim Seyler, and Clifton West were named first team All-Conference and Bob Wham, Bob Boston, and Farrell Benefiel, were named second team All-Conference. Clifton West led the team in scoring with 64, followed by Jim Seyler with 43 and Bernie Schifferdecker with 42.
