As Captain of the Centralia High
School basketball team in 1967, Westbrook
broke Bobby Joe Mason’s 48 point single
game scoring record by scoring 57 in a game
at Herrin. While that record still stands,
it is only one of many accomplishments for
the versatile Westbrook. He also scored 44
and 41 points in games that season, and
totaled 626 (23.1 avg.), and was named to
the Chicago American All-State team. He
compiled 1,094 career points as a C.H.S.
basketball player and was named to the
All-Southern Illinois team in 1966 and 1967.
He received three varsity letters in
basketball, four in baseball, three in
track, and two in football.
As a Junior (1965), the football team was
7-1-1. His Senior football season saw a
record of 8-2, and a second undefeated South
Seven Conference title. Westbrook rushed for
963 yards and passed for 513 yards, as
quarterback of that team. He scored 14 TD’s
and was named to the All-Southern Illinois
Team.
From
high school, he moved on to the basketball
court at S.I.U. As a Sophomore in 1969, he
was a starter, along with fellow Centralian
Dick Garrett, as the Salukis qualified for a
trip to N.I.T.
