The 1993-94 CHS Orphan Annies racked up the first undefeated regular season in girl’s basketball history. Ranked as high as second in the state by the Associated Press during the season, the Annies out-scored their opponents by an average of 23.5 points per game.

In the second to last game of the regular season, leading scorer (16 pts.) and rebounder (10), Summar Maines injured her knee and would not return for the last game or any playoff games. With Corrina Maines, Angie Kelley, and Jodi Murray taking control, the Annies won four playoff games to capture the Sectional, and a home court 52-50 OT win over Jerseyville in the Super Sectional.

The 29-0 Annies met Freeport (30-1) in the quarterfinals at ISU in Bloomington. The girls built up a seven point lead with just 2:37 remaining in the game, but couldn’t hang on for the win. While the bitter defeat ended the fourth Elite Eight appearance for the Annies, the thoughts of “what might have been” linger on.
